LEVEL 1 – LINE EDITING:

  • Identify and correct basic errors in spelling, grammar and/or punctuation.
  • Assumes an average production rate of 5-10 pages per hour based upon a 250 words-per-page standard (as calculated by Microsoft Word’s word count function).
  • Contracted an hourly rate.*

LEVEL 2 – COPYEDITING:

  • Identify and correct basic errors using the mechanics of Level 1 – Line Editing while giving attention to the overall “style” of the manuscript.
  • Flag inappropriate or repetitive word usage and poor sentence structure.
  • Suggest corrections and changes to the author/client who decides whether or not to incorporate the suggestions to maintain his/her voice and vision.
  • Assumes an average production rate of 2-5 pages per hour based upon the 250 words-per-page standard noted under Level 1 – Line Editing.
  • Contracted at an hourly rate.*

LEVEL 3 – COMPREHENSIVE EDITING

  • Includes Level 1 – Line Editing and Level 2 – Copyediting services.
  • In addition, suggestions are made to rephrase sentences and rewrite passages in order to eliminate confusion and strengthen their impact.
  • The author/client decides whether or not to incorporate the suggestions to maintain his/her voice and vision.
  • Assumes an average production rate of 1-4 pages per hour based upon the 250 words-per-page standard noted under Level 1 – Line Editing and no more than a 20% rewrite of the manuscript.
  • Contracted at an hourly rate.*

*Academic, scientific or technical work, or if the rewrite rate exceeds 20% of the manuscript, usually requires a higher hourly rate.

Manuscript Submission Format

  • All manuscripts must be submitted in electronic form utilizing Microsoft Word 2010 or higher or Google Docs.
  • Corrections, changes and suggestions will be made using the correction/ comment feature of these programs.

Client/Editor Agreement

  • A representative sample of the work is often requested in order to determine the level of editing service needed.
  • Once that level is determined, the editor and author/client will sign an agreement stipulating the editing level to be performed and the time frame anticipated.
